The great expanse of water, number of barks passing to and fro, the fertile banks of the Volga, & the distant spines of corn framed this picture. With great difficulty we proceeded over a deep morass of seven versts to Kazan. The road formerly bad being rendered much worse by the late rains. The City of Kazan is situated on the left bank of the river Kazanka, which tho[ugh] small is navigable for barks to the Volga. When it was the capital of the Tartar Kingdom, it was a very considerable city. At present, it contains about 35,000 inhabitants amongst whom are many noble families & rich merchants. It is divided into the Town proper, & the Russian & Tartar slobodas. The latter is chiefly inhabited by people of that nation who are an industrious people & carry on several branches of manufactures here; the houses are of wood, those people have two churches, or mosques, for the observation of their religion, & so far is Mahometanism tolerated here that the crescent is suffoured to crown the minarets. In one of those mosques we saw their service performed in a very decent manner.
In the Russian suburb is a university founded at first by Prince Potemkin, but it has never been much enlarged by the late & present Emperor. It has 2 professors & 6 adjoints, when its number of students is completed it is to have 40, but of those there are very few.
