to a country inhabited by the Russians, where it was easily perceivable that the agriculture there was not so good as we had left here as the soil was fertile. However, there were large crops of grain flax etc, & Hops were planted & flourishing in all the gardens. This country is hilly & from the summit of these Hills we had a beautiful view of the Volga & the country beyond it. The town of Kazan coud also be perceived tho[ugh] at the distance of 30 English miles. Descending the Hills we arrived at extensive & fertile meadows. In the middle of those was a small lake, the banks of which were absolutely fringed with roses of the loveliest red; the road led us thro[ugh] those to the small town of Sviaskh situated on an insulated Hill & no more remarkable, but in having a large convent & a monastery.

18
We were detained here the night for want of Horses & proceeded the next morning toward Kazan; our road leading us first by the marshy banks of the Sviash River, which we shortly crossed in a ferry & traveling about 20 versts further over a very fertile Hilly country; we descended to the banks of the Volga, which [sic] over which we were ferried where it was about a verst in breadth. The view here was very beautiful.
